I’m a firestarter! Twisted firestarter!!

Filed under: Olivia - Jo @ 9:05 pm

The fire got delayed somewhat by the revelation that the council has a bulky rubbish collection organised for tomorrow. Olivia had filled a wheelie bin and was half way down the road before I had time to yell “Wait for me!” But nothing is supposed to be left before 10am in the morning, so it’s all stacked and waiting to go after we get back from her arty thing tomorrow. Ugh! I had a hideous urge to write “tomoz” then…. thankfully, I overcame it.

She very carefully built a firepit, then started chopping and sawing the branches and twigs to fit the pit….

Sawing logs in preparation

Then it was all systems go….

Adding everything suitable she can lay her hands on

Firepit

It got quite fierce for a little fire. Fortunately, Olivia does have a certain respect for the dangers of fire and we had a watering can handy. Which we thought might be more useful if we actually filled it with water. So we did.
Then it started to die down, which left Olivia a tad forlorn….

Starting to die down

Desperately seeking anything to keep it going

She now has great plans for November 5th….

  3. Ahem. One or two photos missing here - the stick twizzling and the flint striking. What do you mean - matches? Brill firepit though. Do I have to show Rick? I mean - it’s a bit superior to his Roses tin.

  4. A lighter! Although it was almost empty and Olivia really wanted to do the stick twizzling.
And you can make charcoal in a Roses tin (or any metal tin with a lid). Just punch some holes in the lid, put some fairly thickish twigs inside, then put the whole lot in a fire. When it starts smoking through the holes, you have charcoal. According to Olivia, willow makes the best charcoal. But then she’s only ever made it with willow, so I’m not sure how accurate that statement is.
